"Joke McConnell"
[edit]"Joke McConnell" was removed as vandalism, but it does have some currency: googles 371 times. Still don't think it should be added to article (lots of people have received lots of childish insults, but hardly notable), but it is perhaps not fair to call its insertion "vandalism". --Mais oui! 12:15, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- The reason I marked it as such is because it has been the latest in a series of edits to add precisely that insult at various places in the text. Perhaps the comment is valid and could be under the controversy heading, but not where I believe it has been inserted merely to compromise the page, like ten or so edits in the last week have been equally so. Erath 16:27, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh... did not realise part of a "campaign". Perhaps if the campaigner would like to explain their rationale?... but if they have only come here to slander political opponents then they are not welcome. Slander cuts both ways: the Plaid Cymru article has been the target of some unpleasant, transparent "campaigners" recently, much to the discredit of the whole Wikipedia project. If you are a fan of a political party you are far better working to improve the articles related to that party: do not troll around trying to defame opponents - it just makes you look like an idiot, not the target of your campaign. --Mais oui! 17:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Policies
[edit]Since the most important thing about a politician might be their actual policies, I find it a shame when such information is lacking. Please develop on First Minister McConnell's political beliefs and government accomplishments. --Liberlogos 22:28, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunatley, Jack McConnell's political beliefs are a little hard to pin down - while being a man of the left, he is known to have a little conservative streak. He has been criticised, in the wikipedia article and elsewhere, in a similar way to Tony Blair for not being able to state concisely what he stands for when asked, and for having little vision or stomach for change. While I am myself a member of the SNP, I'm sure even Labour party members would agree that he is more of an elected civil servant than anything else.AlenWatters 10:45, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Jack was a member of the LCC (Labour Coordinating Committee) in the 80's and was very definitely of the left but his position moved on slightly as he got older. I would describe it as pragmatic which is why its difficult to pin down. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.195.183.172 (talk) 11:46, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Expansion
[edit]I've begun an expansion of this article. We need some more info on his time as Finance and Education Ministers, and his 1st term as FM. Thunderwing 16:45, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Also his period as a political lobbyist for a consultancy firm between leaving as general secretary of the labour party and becoming an MSP. Then there is the issue of his affair and nhow that affected his downfall as general secretary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.195.183.172 (talk) 11:51, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
President of Student Association
[edit]It was stated that he ran 3 times for this post unsuccessfully, but I couldn't find any sources to back this up- so I've removed it. Please add back if a reliable source can be found. Thunderwing 20:31, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Its not true. I was around at the time and he only ran once. When at univerdsity he played in the same football team as Tommy Sheridan, a strange bit of trivia. In fact Sheridan ran the young socialists in the town and was at loggerheads with Jack and others for a few years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.195.183.172 (talk) 11:49, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Jack McConnell, Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale → Jack McConnell – Most commonly used name. The page was moved to the longer title last year without discussion. RafikiSykes (talk) 14:03, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- Comment - the original move was made in July 2010 per this edit. The later moves retained this form but tweaked it. Ben MacDui 07:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- Support. Most notable while serving as First Minister of Scotland, when he was not yet a Peer. He clearly meets the exception clause in WP:NCPEER. Sam Blacketer (talk) 19:29, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
